Repeat the note
You hear one note and repeat it. The note is revealed only after your answer.
Ear training: the target notes stay hidden until you have sung them.
Repeat the note is the simplest ear-training exercise in Clearsing. The piano plays one random note somewhere in your saved range, and you sing it back. There's no fixed pattern: each of the six repetitions is a new pitch, and the target stays hidden on the piano roll until you've sung. That removes the visual crutch and trains the ear-to-voice link directly, hearing a pitch and finding it in your throat. 'Lah' keeps the sound open and easy to analyze.
How to do it
- Press start and listen to the single piano note; don't sing yet.
- Hear the note in your head, then hum it silently until it feels stable.
- Sing 'lah' on that pitch and hold it steady for the note's length.
- The target appears after you sing; check whether your line sits on it, above it or below it.
- Six repetitions, six new notes; notice whether you tend to miss high or low.
Coach's tip: Before you sing, “hear” the note in your head and hum it silently.
What to watch out for
The common mistake is singing too soon, before the sound has settled in memory, and sliding into the target from below. Wait a heartbeat, then start on the pitch, not near it. Another habit is singing an octave off when the note sits at the edge of your range; that's an ear issue, not a voice issue, and it fades with practice. Don't fix a wrong note mid-sing; finish, look at the roll, learn from it. No strain here; stop only when attention fades.
Who it's for
Suitable for complete beginners, and useful for anyone whose intonation drifts. Do it at the start of a session before the voice is fully warm, or as a break between harder exercises. Once six out of six land, move to Repeat the interval or to fixed patterns such as Interval: perfect fifth. It appears in the Intonation and Ear programs.
