“Nay” 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 (mix)

A nasal, bratty NAY. Sets the voice in mix – the top without shouting and without falsetto.

naynaynaynaynaynaynay
One repetition of the pattern. In the app it is transposed to your vocal range and scored note by note.

“Nay” 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 is a major triad stretched to the octave: root, major third, perfect fifth, octave, and back down. Each repetition climbs a semitone, and the pattern sits high in your range, up to two semitones above your saved top. The “n” starts the tone with the folds together, and the bright, nasal “ay” keeps the sound narrow and forward, so top notes stay connected instead of flipping light or turning into a shout.

How to do it

  1. Listen to the piano play the seven-note pattern, then sing it back on “nay”.
  2. Make it bratty and nasal on purpose. Keep the mouth fairly closed on the octave.
  3. Watch the roll: the octave should turn green without sliding in from below.
  4. Each repetition moves up a semitone. Stay just as nasal at the top.
  5. If the last repetitions go red or feel tight, stop and repeat the lower ones.

Coach's tip: Ugly = good. The more nasal and bright, the easier the top “connects” to the bottom.

What to watch out for

The usual failure is opening the mouth wide on the octave. The “ay” turns into “ah”, the sound spreads, and the top note goes flat or becomes a yell. Keep the vowel narrow and let the nose buzz. Another problem is losing the nasal quality on the way down, so the fifth and third come out breathy; keep the buzz to the last root. If the throat tightens or hurts, stop and lower the range.

Who it's for

A level 2 exercise for singers who can sing a clean triad and want their upper notes connected to the rest of the voice. Use it in the main block, after a warm-up such as “Ng” siren (fifth). Then take the same energy into Belt: long note on “eh”. Listed in Path: Powerful pop (mix & belt) and Range extension.
