Twinkle Twinkle Little Star opens with the leap everyone knows: the root repeated, then straight up a perfect fifth, one more step to the major sixth, and a walk back down the scale to the root. The middle section sits on the fifth and steps down to the second, twice, and then the opening returns. Forty-two notes, a span of a major sixth, one pass at 100 beats per minute. It's a study in scale steps after one clean leap, sung to lyrics.

How to do it

Sing along with the piano; the lyrics are shown so you can sing the words.
Nail the opening leap: two roots, then jump cleanly to the fifth without sliding.
Walk down the scale one step at a time, watching for a green block on every step, especially the fourth and second.
In the middle section, the two-beat notes on the second degree should be steady, not fading.
One pass gives you a score; repeat it to beat that score.

Coach's tip: The 0→7 leap is a fifth – the same one as in “Intervals”.

What to watch out for

The leap to the fifth is usually right; what goes wrong is the sixth after it, which many sing as another fifth or push too high. Then the walk down: the fourth and second degrees tend to go flat because they aren't chord tones. Keep some lift in the descent. Repeated notes must be truly identical, not slowly sinking. If the low root feels heavy, lighten the vowel instead of pressing. No strain is expected; if it appears, check your range.

Who it's for

A beginner's melody and a friendly intonation check for anyone. Use it early in a session, after Hum 5-4-3-2-1, or when the leap in Interval: perfect fifth feels shaky and you want to hear it in context. Afterward, try Ode to Joy (Beethoven) for stepwise motion.
