Messa di voce on a high note

Soft → loud → soft on one high note. This is how big pop choruses build tension.

ah
One repetition of the pattern. In the app it is transposed to your vocal range and scored note by note.

Messa di voce on a high note takes one eight-second note high in your range and shapes its volume: soft, loud by the middle, soft again, without the pitch moving. The app measures the crescendo and decrescendo from the mic level, so the shape counts toward the score. The open “ah” gives you room to grow and shows every drift immediately. Three repetitions on the same note, so you can refine the shape each time.

How to do it

  1. Hear the cue note and begin the “ah” quietly, already exactly on pitch.
  2. Grow over the first four seconds by releasing more air, not by tightening the throat.
  3. Fade over the last four seconds, keeping the same pitch and vowel.
  4. Watch the loudness bar rise and fall smoothly while the pitch line stays flat.
  5. Repeat three times on the same note, aiming for a rounder swell each time.

Coach's tip: The pitch must not move when the volume changes. Grow with air, not with the throat.

What to watch out for

The pitch usually goes sharp as the volume rises and flat as it fades, a bump in the line at the middle. Think of the vowel staying narrow as you get louder. The other fault is a note that never truly gets soft again. Keep the chest lifted and finish quietly on purpose. If the peak tightens the throat, lower the peak volume before lowering the range; a smaller, smooth swell scores better than a big broken one.

Who it's for

A level 3 exercise for singers who can hold a steady high note and want dynamics up there. Use it late in the main block, after Belt: long note on “eh”. Learn the shape lower with Messa di voce (soft → loud → soft), then move it up here. Listed in Path: Powerful pop (mix & belt).
