Trill 1-2-1-2-1-2-1

A fast alternation between two notes.

ah
One repetition of the pattern. In the app it is transposed to your vocal range and scored note by note.

Trill 1-2-1-2-1-2-1 alternates between the root and the major second, a whole step, six times in quick eighth notes before settling on the root for a full beat. At 120 beats per minute that's four notes per second. It's the vocal version of a trill on an instrument, and it trains the flexibility of the pitch mechanism itself: two distinct notes, not a wobble. 'Ah' is the most open vowel, so nothing but the pitch changes between the two notes.

How to do it

  1. Listen to the piano's two notes; name them in your head: low, high, low, high.
  2. Sing on a steady 'ah' with the jaw still; let the pitch flick between the two notes.
  3. Watch the piano roll: you want a zigzag of separate green blocks, not a wavy line hovering between them.
  4. Land the final root for its full beat and hold it steady.
  5. Repetitions step up one semitone each; keep the same lightness as you climb.

Coach's tip: Both pitches must be full – don't “slide” between them.

What to watch out for

The main problem is a smear: the two notes fuse into a vibrato-like wobble a quarter tone apart, and the roll shows a yellow line rather than distinct blocks. Slow down in your head and sing each note fully, then speed back up. Bouncing the jaw or the larynx is the other trap; the movement should feel tiny and internal. Don't force the volume. If the throat tires, take a break, and if it hurts, stop for the day.

Who it's for

Advanced beginners and up who can already hold a clean pitch and want real agility. It belongs in the main block after a warm-up such as Gentle 1-2-3-2-1, and it prepares you for Mordent 1-2-1 and 1-7-1 and for pop ornaments. Keep sessions short; a few clean rounds beat many sloppy ones. It's part of the Agility and runs program.
