Falsetto: long high “oo”

A light, airy falsetto on “oo” above your chest range.

oo
One repetition of the pattern. In the app it is transposed to your vocal range and scored note by note.

Falsetto: long high “oo” is a single four-second note above your usual chest range, repeated four times, each two semitones higher. It can reach five semitones above your saved top, because falsetto usually extends further than the full voice. The tone should be quiet, thin, and clean, not a loud hoot. “Oo” with the lips narrowed, as if whistling, keeps the space small, which helps the light voice stay in tune and stops air rushing out unused.

How to do it

  1. Hear the cue note, then float onto it in a quiet, light falsetto on “oo”.
  2. Keep the lips narrow and the airflow small. Stay soft throughout.
  3. Hold four seconds and watch the line stay flat and green.
  4. The next repetition sits two semitones higher. Take a calm breath between.
  5. If the fourth note turns airy and red, go back and hold the third again.

Coach's tip: Little air, lips narrow as if whistling. Falsetto should be quiet and clean.

What to watch out for

Falsetto tends to drift flat as the breath runs out; the line sags in the last second. Use less air at the start so some is left at the end. Another habit is pushing volume, which turns the note into a strained shout; softer is more accurate here. Some breathiness is normal, but if it's mostly air, narrow the lips further. If the highest notes make the throat scratch or the voice give out, stop and lower the range.

Who it's for

A level 2 exercise for singers exploring their light top and for anyone whose falsetto is shaky or breathy. Use it in the main block after a warm-up like “Oo” siren (octave), and pair it with Flip into falsetto 1-8-1 on “oo”, which practices getting into this voice.
