Rhythmic pentatonic phrase

A short phrase with syncopation – like a line in a song.

nehneh
One repetition of the pattern. In the app it is transposed to your vocal range and scored note by note.

The Rhythmic pentatonic phrase uses only the first three degrees of the major scale, root, major second, and major third, arranged as a song line: two quick roots, a step to the second, a longer third, a short rest, then third, second, and a held root. The rest creates the syncopation, and the repeated root gives it a spoken, rhythmic feel. Range is not the challenge; timing and attack are. “Neh” gives a crisp, percussive onset on every note.

How to do it

  1. Listen to the piano play the phrase, including the short rest after the third.
  2. Sing it rhythmically, almost rapping the melody, with a clear “n” on every note.
  3. Hold the third its full beat, then cut off cleanly.
  4. Come back in exactly on time; the blocks should line up with the targets.
  5. Each repetition moves up a semitone. Keep the same groove.

Coach's tip: Sing rhythmically and “percussively”, as if rapping the melody.

What to watch out for

The rest is where the phrase falls apart: singers either hold the third through it or come back late, and the blocks land shifted. Count the half beat silently. The two quick roots are often sung as one long note; make them two separate attacks. The third tends to run slightly flat when held after quick notes; keep the energy up. If it feels hard, the problem is rhythm, not pitch. Lower the tempo slider until the timing locks.

Who it's for

A level 2 exercise for singers who sing scales in tune but sound stiff when a melody has rhythm. Use it in the main block after Gentle 1-2-3-2-1, which uses the same three notes without the syncopation. Pop phrase: acoustic verse is the natural next step. Listed in Path: Light pop (runs & falsetto).
