Messa di voce (soft → loud → soft)
Crescendo to the middle, then decrescendo. The pitch stays put.
Messa di voce means placing the voice: one eight-second note that starts soft, grows to loud in the middle, and returns to soft, while the pitch stays perfectly still. The app tracks your volume from the mic, so the crescendo and decrescendo count toward the score alongside pitch. Three repetitions, each two semitones higher, in a comfortable part of your range. “Ah” is the easiest vowel to grow on without changing shape, and it shows pitch drift clearly.
How to do it
- Hear the cue note and start the “ah” quietly, already exactly on pitch.
- Grow steadily to your loudest comfortable volume by the fourth second, adding air, not tension.
- Fade just as steadily back to soft over the last four seconds.
- Watch the loudness bar at the bottom rise and fall in a smooth arc while the pitch line stays flat.
- Repeat two semitones higher.
Coach's tip: Change volume with the amount of air, not with throat tension. Watch the loudness bar at the bottom.
What to watch out for
The classic problem is a pitch that follows the volume: sharp at the loud peak, flat on the way down. Think of the vowel staying narrow as you get louder. Many singers grow quickly and fade slowly; make the two halves mirror each other. A sudden jump in the loudness bar means the throat opened, not the breath. If you can't get soft again, your peak was too loud; a smaller, smooth swell scores better. Stop if the throat tightens.
Who it's for
A level 2 exercise for singers who can hold a steady note and want to shape it. Use it in the main block after Long note 10 s, once that note is reliably flat and green. When the arc is smooth here, move up to Messa di voce on a high note. Listed in Breath and long phrases.
