Long note 10 s
Ten seconds without wavering and without sagging.
Long note 10 s doubles the challenge of the shorter version: one note held for ten seconds, three times, each two semitones higher. At this length breath management becomes the whole exercise; a note that wavers, sags, or fades shows it on the roll long before the ten seconds are up. The neutral “ah” keeps the throat open and gives the clearest picture of pitch and volume, with no consonant or lip shape to lean on.
How to do it
- Hear the cue note and take a slow, low breath without lifting the shoulders.
- Start the “ah” quieter than feels natural. You need air for the last three seconds.
- Watch the line on the roll: flat, green, and unchanging for the full ten seconds.
- Keep the chest lifted to the end; only the belly moves.
- Rest, then repeat two semitones higher.
Coach's tip: If the note sags at the end, you are starting too loud. Start quieter.
What to watch out for
If the note sags in the final seconds, the start was too loud; halve the volume at the beginning and the end will hold. Pitch creeping up comes from squeezing the throat to save air. Keep the throat loose and let the belly control the flow. A trembling line at the end means you are running on empty; stop before that point. Dizzy? Take a break. Three honest nine-second notes beat three strained ten-second ones.
Who it's for
A level 2 exercise for singers who can hold Long note 6 s cleanly every time. Use it in the main block or as a cool-down. Messa di voce (soft → loud → soft) is a good companion, adding volume control to the same length. Long note 15 s waits after this. Listed in Breath and long phrases.
