- Fast diction “ta ka di mi”
Fast diction “ta ka di mi”
Quick syllables on a few neighbouring notes: diction training like a song with a fast lyric.
A fast diction drill on only three neighboring notes: root, major second and major third, moving up and back in short steps. Each note gets one syllable from “ta ka di mi”, and the syllables are shown on the note tiles, one per note. This is the kind of quick lyric that shows up in fast musical theatre numbers. It trains your tongue, lips and soft palate to move precisely while the pitch stays accurate.
How to do it
- Read the syllables on the note tiles. There is one syllable per note, so you know what to say.
- Listen to the piano play along. The tempo is brisk, so just follow the beat.
- Say each syllable lightly and clearly while singing the pitch. Keep the jaw almost still.
- Let the tone keep flowing under the consonants, instead of chopping the sound into pieces.
- Check the roll: every tile should turn green. If they turn red, slow down and try again.
Coach's tip: Tongue and lips move short and light; the jaw barely moves. The tone keeps flowing under the consonants.
What to watch out for
Speed is the trap. When you rush, the consonants get heavy, the jaw starts to chew, and the pitch gets blurry between neighbors. Keep your tongue and lips small and light. Another common mistake is dropping the vowel and singing only the consonant, so the notes have no center. If the tiles go red, slow the tempo first. Don't tense your neck to stay in time. If your tongue or jaw gets tired, stop and shake it out.
Who it's for
A good fit for any level, but especially for singers who feel their words get sloppy at speed. It belongs to the Musical theatre style, so it gets priority in the daily training when you pick that style. Use it early in the main block, after a warm-up such as “Lip trill – siren”. When you're comfortable, move on to “Diction on an arpeggio “pa ta ka la”” for a bigger challenge.
