Fast 1-3-5-8-5-3-1
Arpeggio in eighth notes.
Fast 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 is a major triad with the octave on top: root, major third, perfect fifth, octave and back, sung in eighth notes at 130 beats per minute. Seven notes cover an octave in about two seconds. The exercise trains clean leaps at speed; the voice has to land on each chord tone without a slide. 'Yah' gives every note a small consonant attack, so the pitches stay separate instead of smearing into one arc.
How to do it
- Hear the piano outline the arpeggio once; the octave is a brief touch, not a stop.
- Sing it on 'yah', letting the 'y' re-articulate each note lightly.
- Aim at the octave as if it were slightly lower than you think, then fall back through fifth and third.
- On the piano roll, check that the octave block turns green even though it lasts only half a beat.
- Each repetition starts one semitone higher; after five you've climbed a major third.
Coach's tip: Only “touch” the octave – don't stop on it.
What to watch out for
Most singers grab the octave: the top note gets loud, sharp and late, and the descent falls apart. Keep the octave the quietest note of the seven. Another common issue is a flat third on the way down, since the voice is still recovering from the top. Watch that block on the roll; if it goes yellow, sing the descending half alone a few times. If your throat grips as the pattern rises, stop climbing, or lower your saved range so the top sits comfortably.
Who it's for
Intermediate singers who have 1-3-5-8-5-3-1 solid at a slower tempo and want to connect low and top notes fast without a bump. Use it in the main block after Major triad 1-3-5-3-1. Follow it with Fast 5-note scale or a pentatonic run. It's listed in the Agility and runs program.
